Position Summary:

The Social Media Manager is responsible for managing the organization’s social media presence and leading its social media engagement strategy.


A Typical Week May Look Like This:
  • Build, execute, and evolve a social media strategy in support of organizational goals through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging, and audience identification.
  • Lead a cross-organization team of contributors to drive results while building meaningful engagements with key audiences.
  • Maintain editorial calendars and generate, edit, and publish original social media content that attracts attention and generates interest.
  • Evaluate the performance of existing and the need for new social media accounts.
  • Design and deploy social media campaigns to drive engagement and increase awareness.
  • Monitor social media daily to identify and address sensitive issues.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with influencers, thought leaders, and social media professionals at other scientific societies.
  • Oversee measurement, analytics, and optimization of social efforts, communicate results, and make recommendations for improvement and growth.
  • Collaborate with marketing team to maintain brand consistency, messaging, and tone.
  • Identify key performance indicators to measure campaign effectiveness and evaluate and evolve the organization’s social media efforts.
  • Maintain awareness of competition, platforms, and audience insights.
  • Explore and experiment with new ways to tell and share APS stories.
  • Train staff and volunteers on responsible and effective social media management.
  • Manage social media profiles and user access.
  • Provide insights and thought leadership on social media best practices and trends.
  • Maintain a keen understanding of social media platforms and make appropriate recommendations regarding activities.

Is This You:
  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, marketing, journalism, or communications preferred.
  • 4+ years progressive experience performing social media management for a nonprofit or association.
  • Expert user of social media management tools, such as Sprout Social.
  • Excellent, polished interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
  • Strong interest in science preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and to maintain the highest ethical standards.
  • Ability to influence without authority and to manage up, down, and across the organization.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects/deadlines with versatility while staying on time and on budget.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain a cool temper.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively telling stories on social media platforms.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to design and execute successful social media campaigns.
  • Ability to build/maintain strong relationships with influencers and relevant brands.
  • Ability to take initiative in identifying and responding to issues/needs as they arise.
  • Proficient in commonly used technology platforms and software, including Google Business Applications, Gmail, project management software, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Strong documentation and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules.
  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.
