Position Summary:

The member advocacy specialist supports the American Physical Society’s (APS) member advocacy initiatives by coordinating volunteer engagement, managing digital advocacy platforms, and organizing key events and recognition programs. This role is integral to advancing APS science policy priorities through grassroots mobilization, digital engagement, and volunteer recognition, apply today!
 

Regular commuting to APS’ Washington, DC office 2 times per week, with additional visits as assigned by supervisor. Occasional commuting to the College Park, MD office (3-5 times per year), with additional visits as needed.

Responsibilities:

Coordination and Logistics:

  • Coordinate APS member participation in advocacy efforts, including Congressional Visits Day and year-round constituent meetings (in-person, virtual, and in-district).
  • Schedule meetings, manage travel logistics, and provide ongoing support for volunteer advocates.
  • Organize materials and coordinate shipping and fulfillment for advocacy events and recognition programs. 
  • Represent APS Public Affairs at scientific conferences and member engagement events. 
Advocacy and Campaign Management:
  • Develop, manage, and execute digital grassroots campaigns using APS’s advocacy platforms, including the APS Action Center.
  • Draft and maintain digital content such as call-to-action messages, template letters, and informational materials.
  • Monitor and analyze data to assess the reach and impact of digital advocacy initiatives.
  • Analyze policy issues and translate them into clear, persuasive advocacy messages for diverse audiences.
  • Provide input on member advocacy strategy and digital mobilization tactics. (added to increase calibration to “specialist” level role).
  • Utilize advocacy platforms to enable APS members to participate in advocacy activities. 

Program Development:

  • Lead the administration of the 5 Sigma Honor program, including outreach, evaluation, and recognition of exemplary volunteer advocates.
  • Coordinate the development and production of advocacy materials (e.g., one-pagers, signage, giveaways) in collaboration with internal departments.
  • Create and adapt content for advocacy and social media aligned with APS’s science policy goals. 
  • Recommend improvements to enhance advocacy program impact and efficiency. (added to increase calibration to “specialist” level role) .

Engagement and Communications

  • Liaise with internal APS teams and external partners to ensure consistent and up-to-date messaging across platforms.
  • Support earned media campaigns by coordinating with volunteer contributors and facilitating placement opportunities. 
  • Recruit and engage new volunteer advocates through targeted outreach efforts. 

Administrative Support

  • Maintain and update Government Affairs-related digital content on APS’s website and social media channels.
  • Participate in strategic discussions and team meetings related to member mobilization and advocacy planning.
  • Exercise organizational judgment and critical thinking to support program development aligned with policy and engagement goals. 
  • Assist with special projects and cross-functional initiatives as assigned. 

Education: 
  • Bachelor’s degree; relevant work experience considered in lieu of degree.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Minimum of one year of experience in policy, advocacy, campaign coordination, or volunteer engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze policy issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high level of professionalism and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and time management skills; ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate logistics, develop operational materials, and support processes that drive program success.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel), Google Workspace, and Zoom.
  • Experience using project management tools such as Asana strongly preferred.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and collaboratively across cross-functional teams.
  • Customer-centric and solutions-oriented mindset with strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. 
  • Flexible and adaptable to shifting priorities and evolving schedules. 


Travel: 

  • This position also requires up to 10% travel to attend events and conferences as well as other off-site locations for periodic meetings and training sessions. Additional travel may be required as assigned by the supervisor.

Salary:
 

The salary range for this position takes into account various factors influencing compensation decisions, such as skill sets, experience, training, and other business and organizational requirements. The salary listed within the specified ranges considers relevant experience. Our compensation philosophy at APS aims to maintain salaries at the midpoint of the market. As a result, we typically hire within the target starting range. Exceptional, rare cases may merit reviews above target starting range for specialized or niche skills aligned with strategic operational goals.


Hiring Range: $55,069/year - $75,031/year (USD)

Target Starting Range: $55,069/year - $61,264/year (USD)


Work Environment:

As noted above, APS offers a “Remote First” workplace. Although our offices are located on Long Island, NY, College Park, MD and Washington DC, you can work from other places in the United States. We are flexible about work hours, but expect responsiveness during the core of the workday, Eastern Time.
