The American Physical Society (APS) is a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics through its outstanding research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities. APS represents over 55,000 members, including physicists in academia, national laboratories, and industry in the United States and throughout the world. Society offices are located in College Park, MD (Headquarters), Ridge, NY, and Washington, D.C.
 

What Will This Person Do? 
As the International Programs Administrator, you’ll work with the Office of International Affairs team to strategize, develop, and enhance programs that engage physicists around the globe, and put those programs into action. You’ll be the face of APS International Affairs, and the point of contact for international members and program participants. The team will rely on you to handle diplomatic communications with physics leaders and partners, and take on the day-to-day tasks that keep our programs running smoothly.


A Typical Week Looks Like This: 

  • Assist with strategic planning and logistical arrangements for Office of International Affairs events at annual APS March and April Meetings.
  • Administer International Research Travel Award Program and other international exchange programs.
  • Handle diplomatic correspondence and communications to international physics leaders and partners.
  • Develop and assist with program planning and logistical arrangements for Young Physicist Forums.
  • Develop procedures and assist with collection and maintenance of data/metrics to evaluate international programs and activities.
  • Help manage and facilitate various international committee meetings, and prepare meeting materials and minutes. 
  • Respond to general office inquiries.
  • Maintain/edit international affairs websites.

International Affairs is your passion, and you have a deep appreciation for the sciences. You’re creative, and can think of new programs and projects that will enhance APS’s international activities. You’re an administrative workhorse – you know how to handle multiple tasks and projects at a time, and keep everything organized. 

Communications are your strong suit – You’re poised and eloquent when speaking with others, and you know how to communicate with people from different cultures and professional backgrounds. Your writing skills are exceptional, and you have experience editing and proofreading written work.
