Position Summary:



The Head of Corporate Relations is responsible for revenue production for APS Scientific Meetings through the sale of sponsorship packages for conferences and events by targeting various Companies and organizations. The Head of Corporate Relations will work with the AIPP representative to create sponsorship and exhibitor packages to include multiple meeting and year-round opportunities.

The Head of Corporate Relations sets target goals and works with AIPP to track our progress and provides weekly updates on results. Provides staff with deliverables to ensure that exhibitor and sponsor needs are met and makes certain that appropriate supporting departments are informed. Assists the Director of Meetings with leading the team to develop and deliver multiple high-quality Society meetings and events that successfully expand the global reach of APS and advance its organizational mission in support of the physics community.

Is This You:
  • Provide business and subject matter expertise to key stakeholders to develop and implement policies and practices that meet business objectives
  • Contribute to development and implementation of departmental policies, practices, and procedures to foster team effectiveness and high-performing dynamics
  • Contribute to creation and management of department documentation, such as procedure guides, to ensure flawless execution of all team services
  • Develop business plan to grow exhibit and sponsorship revenue by 75% over the next three years
  • Lead department data reporting on exhibit and sponsorship sales
  • Utilize telephone solicitation, electronic and written correspondence, and face-to-face meetings as tools to reach and exceed the budgeted sponsorship target for each conference
  • Ability to effectively plan sales strategy
  • Ability to negotiate on behalf of both the buyer and the seller to achieve maximum benefit for both parties
  • Work with AIPP to research and develop a list of potential sponsors for each conference
  • Work with AIPP to research and develop a list of potential exhibitors
  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and potential sponsors and exhibitors
  • Keep precise records of conversations with clients, sponsors and exhibitors
  •  Update the sales database as required
  • Ensure that sponsors and exhibitors are invoiced once agreements have been reached
  • Coordinate various services for meetings
  • Develop a Sponsor and Exhibitor Prospectus for each scientific meeting
  • Assist in preparing contracts and promotional material to sell
  • Go onsite to sell the next opportunity from the current opportunity
  • Maintain knowledge of conference timelines and sponsorship deadlines
  • Professionally represent APS at all times.
  • Create an exhibitor advisory council for the March Meeting to improve the tradeshow
  • Capture, analyze, and understand attendance and behavioral data, and create, conduct, and assess post-event evaluations to inform future meetings and events planning.
  • Benchmark and implement industry best practices in exhibit and sponsorships sales and corporate relations management
  • Work on other meetings and events-planning projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Education:  Bachelor’s degree required. Certified in Exhibition Management (CEM) preferred. Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation preferred. Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation preferred. Active engagement with relevant professional association (s) preferred.


Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in the meetings and/or events-planning industry, preferably within an international, nonprofit science-related society.
  • Accomplished meetings and/or events professional, with an excellent track record of successful sales and corporate relationship development
  • Broad awareness of current and emerging industry trends and demonstrated application of best practices in exhibit and sponsorship sales and corporate development
  • Seasoned practitioner of strategic planning, from conception through successful execution
  • Strong negotiator, with proven experience in successfully contracting advantageous agreements with strategic partners
  • Strong project management and vendor management skills
  • Diplomatically astute, able to understand the perspectives of others and resolve conflicts to mutual satisfaction.
  • Adept at budget development and management, including trend analysis and pragmatic forecasting.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive management/supervisory experience.
  • Insightful manager, able to develop corporate relationships to the best advantage.
  • Capable motivator of people, able to influence without authority and to manage up, down, and across an organization.
  • Big picture, strategic thinking combined with attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Superior attention to detail, with first-class organizational skills.

Travel: The position requires frequent travel to conduct site and vendor assessments, and to attend meetings  and events as part of its core responsibilities, as well as additional travel as assigned. 

Work Environment:


Our physical offices are located in Long Island, NY, Washington, D.C and College Park, MD. We are operational in most US states. While most duties can be conducted remotely, all positions require periodic in-person work at the assigned physical location and periodic travel to other APS locations, meetings and events as assigned by your Supervisor. The American Physical Society allows flexible work hours, responsiveness is required however during the core 9 am to 5 pm Eastern Standard Time workday. The successful candidate will join a collaborative international organization.
