Position Summary:


The American Physical Society (APS) is seeking a Science Policy Intern to work with its Government Affairs (GA) team. Are you looking for a part time position to work for a cause you are passionate about? Our Science Policy Internship will be a temporary six-month part-time role up to 20 hours per week.


The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor. APS values diversity and welcomes candidates from a variety of backgrounds. Responsibilities:

 
  • Assist the Federal Relations Senior Associate to advance federal science policy initiatives that positively impact the physics community, including STEM education and equity.
  • Develop and perform analysis in consultation with the Federal Relations Senior Associate.
  • Develop data visualization tools to support GA advocacy efforts in consultation with the Federal Relations Senior Associate and the Director of Government Affairs.
  • Develop automated procedures to construct data sets relevant to STEM education policy in consultation with the Federal Relations Senior Associate and the Director of Government Affairs.
  • Assist the Federal Relations Senior Associate with development of APS GA advocacy materials.
  • Assist the Federal Relations Senior Associate with supporting the work of the Panel on Public Affairs, which defines the enduring policy positions of the American Physical Society.
  • Assist the Federal Relations Senior Associate with logistics and provide other administrative support as necessary.
  • Communicates regularly with Federal Relations Senior Associate. Interacts with Director of Government Affairs, APS GA staff, OEA Operations and Program Manager, Senior Public Relations Manager and other APS staff as appropriate, as well as APS membership, and colleagues at other scientific organizations.
  • Participate in discussions of office projects within the science policy portfolio. Remain up-to-date on APS GA policy priorities, positions, and activities to the extent required to independently complete daily responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, computer science, physical science and/or public policy major preferred. Exceptions can be made for outstanding undergraduate students.


Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
 
  • Minimum of two years undergraduate coursework in physical science, computer science or public policy preferred
  • Proficient in data visualization tools and techniques, web-based tools preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office and Google Suite
  • Proficient in analyzing data, using MS excel or other tools
  • Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules.
  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.


Travel: This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor. 
 

Work Environment:


Our physical offices are located in College Park, MD, Washington D.C and Hauppauge, N.Y. We are operational in most US states. We are not operational in all 50 states. The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access within the United States, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. APS allows flexible work hours; responsiveness is required, however, during the core 9 am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time workday.
