The American Physical Society (APS) is a nonprofit membership organization working to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics through its outstanding research journals, scientific meetings, and education, outreach, advocacy, and international activities. Position Summary:
Lead and shape the online magazine Physics, which covers key research from the journals of the APS and publishes other articles of general interest to the physics community.


A Typical Week May Look Like This
  • Leading a team of writers, editors, freelance journalists and illustrators in all aspects of running a high-quality online magazine for the APS journals.
  • Working with senior management to guide and develop the progress of Physics, providing progress reports at internal meetings and incorporating feedback, as needed.
  • Working with Physics staff to initiate, develop, launch, and evaluate new content and/or to develop and improve existing content.
  • Attending conferences and visit scientific institutes to increase the visibility of Physics.
  • Working with web designers and marketing specialists to improve the appeal and visibility of Physics.
  • Managing the day-to-day workflow of the publication, ensuring the adequate training and availability of staff.
  • Ensuring adherence to annual budget and manage contracts with external writers, editors, and illustrators
  • Commission/assign, acquire, and edit features for Physics.
  • Coordinate with APS journal editors to identify papers to highlight in Physics.
  • Coordinate with APS staff to market highlighted articles to the press.
  • Undertake special projects for the benefit of the APS, as directed.

Is This You:

Education: Ph.D. in the physical sciences.  

Experience: 5+ year’s experience in science writing and editing for a nonspecialist audience, preferably for a web- or print-based science magazine.

  • Broad awareness of developments in physics research and issues of importance to the physics community.
  • Awareness of trends in scientific-magazine publishing and science journalism.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and evaluations.
  • A strong sense of responsibility and a proven commitment to the job.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules.
  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.
