Position Summary:

 

            The Head of Integrated Marketing Communications, Membership & Programs leads marketing and communications strategy for a portfolio of APS programs and services (e.g. membership, advocacy, fundraising, programmatic efforts) to create awareness, maximize engagement, and grow revenue. The ideal candidate possesses a strong understanding of marketing and communications fundamentals and has experience working at or with membership associations.


Responsibilities:

 

  • Strategy: Develop and manage marketing and communications strategy for a portfolio of APS programs and services.
  • Marketing: Oversee portfolio-specific marketing campaigns, employ best practices across paid, owned, and earned channels, monitor KPIs, and provide real-time feedback for program leads by leveraging data, analytics, and customer research.
  • Media/Public Relations: Handle portfolio-specific press inquiries and coordinate responses, prepare and distribute press releases and other materials, and oversee press events for APS programs.
  • Membership Marketing: Promote membership benefits, pricing, and value.
  • Exhibits & Promotional Activities: Support portfolio-related APS-staffed exhibits and manage the sale of promotional materials (APS Store).
  • Communities: Manage online communities to optimize interactions between community members and increase information sharing.
  • Content: Communicate the APS story consistently and effectively through the development of portfolio-specific key messaging.
  • Email: Oversee portfolio-related email marketing strategy, ensure accuracy and effectiveness of messaging, and monitor cadence of portfolio-related emails.
  • Digital: Collaborate with Head of Web Strategy and others to utilize digital platforms (CRM, email tools, websites) to build successful customer journeys and monitor customer insights.
  • Brand: Collaborate with the Head of Brand to ensure consistent usage and effectiveness of the APS brand.
  • Social Media: Oversee portfolio-specific social media channels and messaging, and monitor channels to identify and address issues and present solutions.
  • Management: Manage a team of communications professionals, establish workflows and operating procedures, allocate resources, and assure quality.
  • Crisis Communications: Monitor reputation and manage incidents, public controversies, and news inquiries/situations related to the portfolio that could positively or negatively impact the organization’s or profession’s reputation.
  • Executive: Assist with media training and preparation of portfolio-specific presentations, speeches, and talking points for senior and volunteer leadership.
  • Project Management: Oversee communication plans, track campaign progress, and allocate resources to deliver initiatives on time.
  • Reporting: Create reports on communications activities.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or other related fields is required.


Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

 

  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience managing marketing and communications, preferably at an association or nonprofit.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience performing integrated marketing communications tasks for a membership association and managing a team of communications professionals.
  • Strong leadership and management experience.
  • Experience working with publishing and editorial professionals.
  • Experience managing a team in a multi-tasked, detail- and deadline-oriented environment.
  • Experience successfully managing corporate image and interacting with the media.
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent polished interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to proactively identify and respond to needs.
  • Experience managing workflow and projects in Asana or similar tools.
  • Expert in specialized software such as tools for analytics, social media management, media monitoring, customer relationship management, and email marketing.
  • Proficient in commonly used technology platforms and software, including Google Business. Applications, Gmail, Asana, word processing, and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.


Travel: This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor.


Work Environment:


Our physical offices are located in College Park, MD, Washington D.C and Hauppauge, N.Y. We are operational in most US states. We are not operational in all 50 states. The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access within the United States, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. APS allows flexible work hours; responsiveness is required, however, during the core 9 am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time workday.
