Position Summary:
As an HR professional, you work every day to support your organization’s greatest asset: its people. At the American Physical Society, our people support the physics community, and a large network of science professionals. We’re looking for an HR Business Partner to help us develop high-level HR solutions across all practice areas of APS.

This is a temporary position (approximately six months) to help manage day-to-day work as well as several exciting, new strategic HR initiatives, including but not limited to: an organization-wide compensation benchmarking project; implementing a new learning management and performance management system (Cornerstone); reviewing and updating all HR policies and the APS handbook; an internal values change management initiative; developing a peer-to-peer recognition program; and formalizing a professional development plan and manager training program.

Major Responsibilities:

Research:
  • Research policies and best practices. Draft PowerPoint slide decks and white papers, as requested.
  • Learn and implement various HRIS technologies to support various initiatives (ie LMS, Performance Management, etc.).
  • Review and update various templates and toolkits for key workforce projects.
HR Advisory:
  • Draft legally compliant position descriptions.
  • Implement a new APS performance management system (Cornerstone).
  • Update employment handbook for APS (or work with an HR vendor).
  • Research and recommend compensation structures using generally accepted HR software and market research. Assist with ongoing compensation benchmarking project.
  • Prepare high quality documents in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Continually identify business/employee opportunities and provide solutions to meet them.
  • Lead branding, communication, administration and facilitation for internal programs of workshops, events, digital campaigns and other experiences.
HR Audit & Compliance:
  • Lead various HR Audits (Records Retention, I-9, 403B, Benefits, etc.) to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
Employee Relations:
  • Answer advanced HR questions from managers; escalate any sensitive issue to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Lead workplace investigations.
  • Conduct Respectful Workplace/Harassment Prevention Training.
Training & Organizational Development:
  • Design and deliver various training initiatives for APS including management training.
  • Help implement a new Learning Management System and Performance Management System (Cornerstone) for APS.
  • Build content for and implement customized, innovative adult learning programs that drive short-term and long-term change.
  • Facilitate training for existing programs (e.g., interview training, goal setting, performance management) and custom programs (e.g., leadership projects, culture initiatives, various workshops).
  • Lead branding, communication, administration and facilitation for internal programs of workshops, events, digital campaigns and other experiences.
  • Continually identify business/employee opportunities and provide solutions to meet them.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • HR or Professional Certification required (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or other approved certification).
  • 5+ years of corporate HR or training experience.
  • Polished, professional, optimistic, and self-starting personality and attitude.
  • Highly organized individual who is detail oriented.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel.
  • Must have excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Must present information verbally and in writing to clients.
