Position Summary:
The senior manager, brand and creative strategy supports the organization’s creative direction and visual brand expression across print, digital, and multimedia platforms. This position is responsible for managing activities that help ensure the APS brand is consistently and effectively represented to a variety of audiences, including members, policymakers, scientists, and the public. In collaboration with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content, the senior manager is responsible for the management of processes that execute creative assets, and maintaining visual consistency and quality across all channels. The role works closely with a multidisciplinary creative team and external partners to support campaigns, uphold brand standards, and provide design solutions to internal teams. The senior manager plays a managerial part in supporting a collaborative, cross-functional environment across marketing, meetings, membership, publications, editorial, and other departments. Key Responsibilities
Brand Strategy & Creative Management
- Operationalize and manage the APS brand strategy, ensuring all creative work reflects the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Help to manage the execution of visual identity across digital, print, events, and multimedia, maintaining brand integrity and consistency.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to serve as an additional brand ambassador internally and externally, supporting storytelling efforts that elevate APS’s profile and impact.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to evolve visual frameworks and campaign design systems over time.
Creative Services Management
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to oversee the workflow of the day-to-day operations of the creative team, including designers, project managers, and external vendors.
- Manage the intake and prioritization of creative requests using project management tools such as Asana.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to provide strategic and hands-on guidance for campaign concepting, design reviews, asset development, and production timelines.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to support processes that help to ensure the creative team is aligned with organizational priorities and empowered to produce high-quality, on-brand deliverables.
Project and Production Management
- Monitor workflow and provide updates to stakeholders, flagging bottlenecks or risks proactively.
- Partner closely with communications, web, editorial, meetings, and membership teams to support cross-channel consistency.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to support the management of creative production schedules, managing activities that help to ensure all projects meet deadlines, budget parameters, and content objectives.
Publications & Content Design Management
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to support the design strategy for APS publications print and digital ensuring content layout, visual hierarchy, and brand integration are optimized.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to work with editorial and communications colleagues to align message and design in journal marketing, policy briefs, and special reports.
Process Support
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to on ideas to support creative staff, on how to provide coaching, and foster professional development as a team.
- Manage relationships with vendors and contractors, overseeing creative scope, timelines, and quality control.
- Stay up to date on trends in design, digital storytelling, and content strategy to ensure APS remains relevant and forward-looking.
- Collaborate with the assistant director of marketing, brand, design & content to identify opportunities to improve creative workflows, team efficiency, and visual impact.
- Support accessibility, inclusivity, and equity principles in all creative outputs.
Preferred Certifications:
● Adobe Certified Professional: Creative Cloud
● Adobe Certified Expert (ACE)
● Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in creative services, branding, or visual design.
● Minimum of 2 years of experience managing or mentoring creative professionals or leading multi-channel projects.
● Proven ability to lead creative strategy and direct execution across a variety of media formats (print, digital, video, social, web).
● Advanced demonstrated understanding of branding, visual systems, and creative storytelling.
● Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, present, and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams and executive stakeholders.
● Demonstrated ability to lead creative problem-solving processes and navigate ambiguity in high-velocity, deadline-driven environments.
● Proven expertise in managing concurrent initiatives while ensuring precision, brand integrity, and creative excellence across all deliverables.
● Deep understanding of brand governance and execution across diverse platforms, channels, and audience segments.
● Track record of supporting high-performing creative teams through strategic production oversight, resource allocation, and workflow optimization.
● Advanced experience using project management systems and principles (e.g., Asana) to track deliverables and timelines.
● Advanced skills in Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and collaboration tools like Figma.
● Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
● Proven ability to think strategically, collaborate across departments, and deliver results in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
● A compelling portfolio demonstrating excellence in design, visual storytelling, and campaign development.
Travel: This is a remote-first role, primarily based from home within the United States, with significant travel, up to 10%, required for visiting client sites, attending public relation, media and marketing events, occasional in-person consulting, and public relations and media coordination at events, and participating in conferences, meetings, training, and strategy sessions at various locations including APS offices in Hauppauge, NY, College Park, MD, and the Washington DC metro area.
Salary:
The salary range for this position takes into account various factors influencing compensation decisions, such as skill sets, experience, training, and other business and organizational requirements. The salary listed within the specified ranges considers relevant experience. Our compensation philosophy at APS aims to maintain salaries at the midpoint of the market. As a result, we typically hire within the target starting range. Exceptional, rare cases may merit reviews above target starting range for specialized or niche skills aligned with strategic operational goals.
Hiring Range: $83,574/year - $113,870/year (USD)
Target Starting Range: $83,574/year - $92,976/year (USD)
Work Environment:
As noted above, APS offers a “Remote First” workplace. Although our offices are located on Long Island, NY, College Park, MD and Washington DC, you can work from other places in the United States. We are flexible about work hours, but expect responsiveness during the core of the workday, Eastern Time.
