Position Summary:
If you are excited about raising awareness of physics research, producing high-quality work, and supporting a team effort, we invite you to consider applying for the Science Writer role for the American Physical Society. As a Science Writer within the APS Public Relations team, the position would cover all areas of physics, identifying newsworthy stories that heighten awareness about research published in APS's world-renowned Physical Review journals. The Science Writer position also communicates through social media and collaborates with internal and external colleagues. If you are a strong writer and media specialist with a record of experience writing about science for a newspaper, magazine, or research institution, then this role is for you!
The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. A Typical Week May Look Like This:
- Assist in the identification of newsworthy scientific content for promotion to the press and via social media
- Contribute short, engaging summaries of Physical Review papers to a weekly tip sheet for reporters.
- Write and edit press releases about scientific presentations at March Meeting, April Meeting, and various APS division meetings.
- Write occasional stories for APS News or other APS outlets, as assigned.
- Identify multimedia assets to accompany written content.
Is This You:
Education: Bachelor's degree in physics or related science. A Master’s degree in science writing or journalism is a plus.
Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience writing about science for a newspaper, magazine, or research institution.
- Exceptional reporting and interviewing skills—must be comfortable speaking with scientists about highly technical topics on the phone, video conference, and in-person.
- Ability to distill complex information into clear and concise prose.
- Demonstrated understanding of journalistic standards and ethics.
- Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules.
- Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.
Travel: Position may require some business travel to attend meetings and events as directed by the supervisor.
