Position Summary:
The American Physical Society seeks a dynamic Editor to lead APS News, our Society newsletter. The Editor understands what makes an interesting angle to a story and juggles all the moving parts of the publication including strategy, planning, writing, reviewing, and editing. They are responsible for deciding what ideas should be pursued and which should get dropped to meet quality and accuracy standards with the goal of providing exceptional, informative, and engaging content to our members. The Editor is responsible for timely production and exploring ways to evolve the publication to increase engagement and satisfaction among its readership. The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations.This position could require at times in office work, various geographic events and meeting attendance as instructed by your Supervisor. A Typical Week May Look Like This:
Is This You:
- Manage the writing, editing, and publishing of 11 issues of APS News per year.
- Set publication standards and establish goals and expectations.
- Develop, select, and assign stories in alignment with APS goals and core values and the interests of our target audiences.
- Work with the design team to oversee layout and coordinate publishing production schedules.
- Recruit and manage (agreements, invoices, travel budget) a diverse set of freelance writers.
- Interact with APS members and the physics community regarding published content and suggestions for coverage.
- Maintain awareness of APS programs and activities, and collaborate with leadership and staff to identify and review article ideas.
- Liaise with writers, designers, and photographers.
- Coach content contributors across the organization through the content creation process.
- Provide writing, editing, and proofreading support across the organization as needed.
- Contribute to strategies around social media and digital content as they relate to APS News.
- Collaborate with communications staff to amplify strategic messaging and place advertisements
Scope and Relationships:
- individual contributor role
Education: BS in Journalism or related field.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience managing or editing a publication.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Extensive familiarity with the physics research community—its leaders, its innovators, its culture, and its practices.
- Strong background and demonstrated accomplishments in one or more of the following: journalism, publishing, science writing, management of writing staff, or working with magazine/newsletter production and art staff.
- Proven experience as an Editor.
- Strong writing, editing, proofreading skills and an excellent portfolio.
- Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills.
- Strong communication and interviewing skills.
- An eye for detail along with critical thinking.
- Experience with publication production schedules.
- Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.
- Ability to write quickly and accurately.
- Familiarity with project management processes and tools, and experience using Google Suite.
- Strong organization, documentation, and prioritization skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to quickly changing schedules.
- Ability to work well with interdepartmental teams as well as independently.
Travel: Position may require some business travel to attend meetings and events as directed by supervisor.
