Position Summary:


The Head of Integrated Marketing, Research & Journals will serve as a vital leadership team member and will be responsible for marketing strategy for a portfolio of scientific journals to expand into new markets, create awareness, maximize engagement, and grow revenue. Reporting to the Communications Director, will lead the design and implementation of comprehensive marketing strategies by leveraging data, analytics, and customer research. Responsibilities:

  • Lead marketing strategic efforts for APS’s scientific journals and research and measures effectiveness of efforts via ROI. 
  • Develops an annual APS marketing strategy and promotional plan for approved initiatives and oversees planning and production of the tactics to operationalize each initiative. 
  • Creates and implements the digital content strategy to amplify the organization’s reach, expand the audience, and raise brand awareness for APS’s scientific journals and research. 
  • Develops strategies to grow subscriptions or author submissions to APS’s journals and stays abreast of email marketing trends and best practices, ensuring optimal use of current tools and technologies to increase efficiency and expand APS’s reach.  
  • Overseas development and implementation of social media strategy and implementation across all platforms for journals and research. 
  • Consults with and advises staff and departments on communication and content options as they develop their program plans. 
  • Manages relevant projects from initiation through completion to ensure outcomes are delivered on time and within established budgets. 
  • Plan and execute campaigns for the launch of new products.
  • Communicate the Physical Review story consistently and effectively by developing key messaging and producing valuable content.
  • Oversee journals-related email marketing strategy, ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of messaging, and monitor the cadence and effectiveness of email.
  • Utilize digital platforms (CRM, email tools, websites) to build successful customer journeys and monitor customer insights.
  • Manage journals-related exhibits at scientific meetings by strategically selecting exhibitions, preparing on-site strategy, staffing booths, generating leads, and overseeing follow-through.
  • Oversee social media strategy and messaging for journals-related channels, and monitor channels to identify and address issues.
  • Collaborate with the creative team to ensure consistent usage and effectiveness of APS brand and journal identities.
  • Conduct market research to keep abreast of trends and competitors.
  • Oversee the identification and promotion of press-worthy content to secure positive and accurate media coverage of peer-reviewed journals and scientific meetings.
  • Manage a team of marketing and communication  professionals, establish workflows and operating procedures, provide guidance and feedback, allocate resources, and assure quality.
  • Monitor and report progress and submit performance reports on marketing campaigns and media coverage.
  • Establishes benchmarks and KPI metrics for marketing campaigns and communication APS’s journals and research products, measuring effectiveness and ROI.
  • Produces and analyzes monthly analytics reports for APS Journal and research products, campaigns and develops recommendations for adjustments and improvements.
  • Provides campaign-based, monthly and quarterly reports for APS leadership on defined benchmarks and metrics.  
  • Writes and edits engaging promotional copy across multiple platforms, including digital communications, the website, social media, marketing print collateral such as brochures, direct mail, and in-house advertisements for APS’s journals and research.
  • Drafts speeches, scripts, talking points and supporting materials for APS leadership to deliver at conferences and industry events.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or other related fields is required.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
 
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience managing marketing, preferably at a scientific publisher with a track record of positive outcomes and ROI.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing a team of marketing professionals.
  • Strong leadership and management experience.
  • Experience working with marketing, communication, publishing and editorial professionals.
  • Experience successfully managing corporate image and interacting with the media.
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent polished interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Experience in project management, including resource allocation and workflow management using Asana or similar tools. PMP or similar preferred. 
  • Thorough knowledge in goal-setting, KPI metrics, business intelligence, analytics, social media management, media monitoring, customer relationship management, and email marketing.
  • Proficient in commonly used technology platforms and software, including Google Business.


Travel: This position could require up to 20- 25% business travel to attend meetings and events as directed by the supervisor.
 

Work Environment:

Our physical offices are located in College Park, MD, Washington D.C and Hauppauge, N.Y. We are operational in most US states. We are not operational in all 50 states. The APS has a “remote first” concept that promotes equal treatment and equal access within the United States, independent of physical work location, with a majority of staff working primarily from remote work locations. APS allows flexible work hours; responsiveness is required, however, during the core 9 am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time workday.
